How to Apply

STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR ACTIVITY CATEGORY...

Each applicant must apply in ONE or TWO of the following categories:

  1. PARTICIPANTS/Category I — COMPOSERS MASTER CLASS WITH LISA MOORE–Composers will submit a piano work to be performed by Lisa Moore or by one of the pianists chosen for the pianists master class (see #2 below). Each composer will attend a rehearsal of the work and the concert performance which will be professionally recorded. Composers may submit a previously composed piano work, or apply to compose a new work that will be given its world premiere at the symposium in Beall Hall.
  2. PARTICIPANTS/Category II — PIANISTS MASTER CLASS WITH LISA MOORE–Pianists and composer/pianists will prepare a performance of a work composed by one of the participants (or composed by themselves), which they will play for a master class with Lisa Moore, and then, on one of the Crosscurrents concerts in Beall Hall. The master class and their concert performance will be professionally recorded. [Lisa Moore will perform at least three works by symposium participants.]
  3. PARTICIPANTS/Category III — IMPROVISATION GROUP–Composer/performers (and composers) will apply to participate in an improvisation group. The groups will work together during the symposium (under the guidance of Robert Kyr) and perform in the WILD NIGHTS Improv Cafes (10:30 until midnight on July 6, 7 & 8) at the Collier House Performance Space.
  4. PARTICIPANTS/Category IV — COMPOSERS GAMELAN–Composers will apply to perform in the "Composers Gamelan" (Balinese Gamelan) led by Robert Kyr. Each member of the group will have an opportunity to create a short work for the ensemble (while in residence at the festival) which will be premiered on the final concert of the CROSSCURRENTS series. Places are available at all levels (beginning, intermediate and advanced) and prior experience is not required.
  5. PARTICIPANTS/Category V — AUDITOR–Anyone may apply as an auditor for the general symposium components and/or any of the categories above (that is, Categories I-IV).
PLEASE NOTE: Each applicant may apply for MORE THAN ONE category, if you wish, with no increase in tuition. Each applicant will be selected for ONE or TWO of the categories.

STEP 2: SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS...

Each applicant must submit the following:

  1. APPLICATION FORM -- Please complete and print out the application form and include it with your materials (important).
  2. BRIEF RESUME
  3. PRINTED MATERIALS FOR ALL COMPOSERS: SCORES

    All composers must submit at least three scores for any combination of instruments. PLEASE NOTE: If you are applying for Category I (COMPOSERS MASTER CLASS WITH LISA MOORE), you may submit a previously composed piano piece that you would like to be performed, OR you may apply to compose a new piano work to be premiered. In any case, please be sure that you submit at least one work for solo piano or for an ensemble that includes piano. If you choose to compose a new piano work (after you are accepted), the deadline for receipt of the piano score will be: Wednesday, May 30, 2007. Newly composed works should be around 5-8 minutes in duration (but no longer than 10 minutes).

  4. COMPACT DISC(S) --
    1. FOR COMPOSERS: You may send as many CD's as you wish.
    2. FOR COMPOSER/PERFORMERS: Please send at least two CD's: your first CD should be 2-3 performances of your compositions and your second CD should be at least 2-3 examples of your work as a performer and/or improvisor.
    3. FOR PIANISTS (NOT applying as composers or composer/performers): Please send one CD that features at least 2-3 of your performances of solo piano music, particularly 20th and 21st century music.
  5. LETTER(S) of RECOMMENDATION (optional) -- If you choose to send letters of recommendation, please do not send more than two.
  6. SELF-ADDRESSED, STAMPED ENVELOPE for the return of materials. Please note: If you do not send a self-addressed, stamped envelope, your materials will not be returned.
  7. MAILING ADDRESS -- Please mail all materials to:

  8. Deadline for Receipt of Materials: For all Participants (Categories I, II, III & IV): Due to a large amount of interest, the deadline has been extended to Tuesday, April 24, 2007. For Auditors (Category V): Tuesday, May 22, 2007. If you wish to apply for the symposium after the April 24 deadline, please contact Robert Kyr immediately at (541) 346-3766 or rkyr@uoregon.edu. All those who apply after April 24 will be considered on a "first-come-first-served" basis.
  9. Notification of Application Status: Applicants will be notified regarding acceptance no later than Friday, April 20, 2007.
  10. Deposit: A $275 non-refundable deposit is required upon notification of acceptance in order to reserve a place. Please mail all deposits (check payable to "COMPOSERS SYMPOSIUM") to:
